GREENWICH, CT — A 51-year-old man was arrested late Saturday night after police said he broke into an apartment with a knife in the Byram section of Greenwich and threatened to stab the family living there, which included three children.
Police called it an "isolated incident," and that the arrestee, Edwin Gutierrez-Vasco, knew the victims. There were no injuries to the victims reported, and there was no immediate threat to the public, police said in a news release.

At approximately 10:31 p.m., on Oct. 14, Greenwich police officers were called to the Byram section of town on a report of a man, later identified as Gutierrez-Vasco, stabbing at and damaging parked cars with a knife on the side of the street, police said in a news release.

While officers were on their way to the scene, dispatch noted that the information received via 911 "was not clear due to a language barrier and that there may be a stabbing victim in the area," police said.
Several cars were found with fresh damage, police said, and officers received information that Gutierrez-Vasco, armed with a knife, had forced his way into an apartment building in the area.
"Gutierrez-Vasco is reported to have then ascended a staircase to the second floor, where he forced his way into an apartment by breaking through the door," police said. "He entered the apartment brandishing the large knife and attempted to stab the occupants."
Police said a man from the apartment confronted Gutierrez-Vasco, who was yelling he was going to kill the man and his mother.
"The victim picked up a baby gate and was able to defend himself and the children against Gutierrez-Vasco's stab attempts. After several stab attempts the male victim was able to convince Gutierrez-Vasco to drop the knife," police said.
Officers arrived and found Gutierrez-Vasco in a chair with the man who confronted him standing next to him, police said.
Police said Guitierrez-Vasco resisted as officers tried to place him under arrest.
After a brief struggle, he was placed in handcuffs and continued to make threats to harm himself, police added.
Gutierrez-Vasco was taken by medics to Greenwich Hospital. Police said he was bleeding from the hand.
Police said Gutierrez-Vasco is being held at GPD headquarters and will be transported to Stamford Superior Court.
