New Fitness Center Could Be Coming To Greenwich

GREENWICH, CT — Barry's, a fitness chain with more than 70 locations in 16 states and 14 countries around the world, could be coming to Connecticut.

Plans for a 3,750 square foot Barry's in Greenwich were submitted recently to the town's Planning & Zoning Commission.

Barry's was founded in West Hollywood, Calif. in 1998, and utilizes High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Fitness classes alternate between weight lifting and cardio, and focus on different muscle groups. There are several Barry's in New York City and Long Island. The closest location to Greenwich is in Scarsdale, N.Y.

The fitness center would be located at 51 Weaver St. on the western side of Greenwich within the Greenwich Office Park, which is owned by New Greenwich Park LLC.

According to application documents submitted to Planning & Zoning, an addition to Building 5 within the complex totaling 1,650 square feet would be built to accommodate Barry's, and there would be a change of use of a portion of the building from general office to a fitness center.

Barry's would offer eight to 12 group fitness classes per day with a capacity of 45 people per class, according to application documents.

Proposed hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 5:20 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Classes are for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break between classes. Three to five employees typically work per shift.

According to Colliers Engineering and Design, a consulting firm which conducted a traffic and parking study on the site, there would be adequate parking for the proposed fitness center.

This application is currently listed under "pending applications," and has not yet been scheduled to go before the Planning & Zoning Commission.
