Obituary: Joseph Arthur DeMarkey, of Greenwich

Joseph Arthur DeMarkey, son of Joseph and Margaret DeMarkey, was born on January 6, 1938, in Portchester, NY. He received the Sacraments of Initiation at Sacred Heart Church in Byram, Ct.

Joseph was a lifelong Greenwich resident. He attended public schools in Greenwich, Connecticut and studied at Westchester Community College and the University of Bridgeport. He received his basic training with the Air National Guard in Texas and remained in the reserves for six years at the Westchester County Airport base.

Joe was a volunteer within the Greenwich community in various roles as:

  • Chairman of the Parish Council & Liturgy Committee at St. Mary Church.
  • Red Baron at Greenwich Hospital and Captain of the Greenwich Special Police.

Joe also faithfully volunteered monthly at the Pacific House in Stamford whereby he helped to feed the homeless. He worked for 17 years at RB&W in Portchester, NY; for 17 years at Star Expansion Industries in Mountainville, NY and another 17 years as the Assistant Director of the Greenwich Continuing Education Program;

Joe joins in heaven his beloved wife Linda Venuti DeMarkey, whom he married in 1962 and is survived by their three children: Joseph P. DeMarkey (and Paula); Laura A. DeMarkey King (and Richard); Peter C. DeMarkey (and Eileen).

He cherished and loved their 8 grandchildren: Julia and Christopher DeMarkey; Madelyn, Hannah, Lydia and Andrew King; Abigail, Elizabeth, Thomas and Edward DeMarkey. Also surviving is his brother, John DeMarkey (and Wendy) of Florida.

He and his wife were daily communicants at St. Paul Church in Greenwich where he was a Minister of the Eucharist, Lector, and Co-Director of the Pre-Baptism Program. He enjoyed vacationing in Kennebunk Maine every summer, in Turks and Caicos in the winter.

He loved helping others in the family, the neighborhood and the community.

Funeral arrangements will be made by Castiglione Funeral Home, 544 Old Post Road 3, Greenwich CT.
