Obituary: Rosemary Corcoran Newberry, 91, Of Cos Cob

Rosemary taught in the Greenwich Public Schools as an ESL instructor and a substitute teacher.

Rosemary Corcoran Newberry of Cos Cob, CT passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2023. Rosemary was born in Scranton, PA on May 9, 1932 to Dr. and Mrs. William Corcoran and was the eldest of six children. Rosemary graduated from Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA in 1949 and from Rosemont College in Rosemont, PA in 1953. At Rosemont College she met the love of her life, Joseph R. Newberry who attended Villanova University, to whom she was married for 70 years.

A devoted wife and mother, Rosemary is survived by her husband Joe, her children Nancy Kristoff (Chris) and Jay Newberry (Reed), three wonderful grandsons Michael Kristoff, William Newberry and Thomas Newberry, and her siblings Nancy Corcoran Monti and William Corcoran. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Rosemary was predeceased by her siblings Alice Corcoran Holmes, John Corcoran, MD, and Jane Corcoran Briggs.

Shortly after marriage, Rosemary and Joe moved to the Greenwich area and resided in Riverside and then Cos Cob, but her connection to Scranton, PA remained strong throughout her life.

A longtime member of Innis Arden Golf Club, Rosemary was also a member of the Greenwich Woman’s Club until her death where she served as Executive Vice President and presided over the philanthropic committee for many years. Rosemary taught in the Greenwich Public Schools as an ESL instructor and a substitute teacher. A devout Catholic, Rosemary was an active parishioner at St. Catherine of Siena Church and St. Clement Church and a volunteer with the Neighbor to Neighbor lunch program.

Calling hours will be held at Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street Greenwich, CT on Wednesday, July 26 from 4-8 PM. A celebration of life Mass will be held at St. Clement Church in Stamford, CT at 10 AM on Thursday, July 27 followed by interment at Putnam Cemetery, Greenwich, CT.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ann’s Monastery, 1233 St. Ann Street, Scranton, PA 18504.
