Police Conduct Over 30 Vehicle Stops On Student Orientation Day In Greenwich: PD

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department said on Thursday that its Traffic Section conducted 33 vehicle stops as students returned to school for orientation ahead of the first day of classes on Friday.

Officers also issued 21 infractions and issued eight warnings, noting the highest recorded speed for a vehicle was 55 mph on East Putnam Avenue near Cardinal Stadium at approximately 9:15 a.m.

"With the new school year beginning, we are asking everyone to slow down and give themselves a little extra time on the road," police said in a social media post.

"Please remain alert for students walking and biking to school, yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, obey school-zone speed limits, and always stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights.School traffic means more buses, pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles sharing our roads," police added. "A few extra seconds of patience can make a difference. Please slow down, stay alert, and help us keep our students safe as they head back to school."

Greenwich's pedestrian safety plan, including the use of speed cameras in school zones, is being reviewed by the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Once final approval is given, the cameras will become active again.
