Police, Public Works Launch New 'Greenwich GO' Campaign

GREENWICH, CT — The town of Greenwich is officially launching Greenwich GO, a new public awareness campaign series aimed to educate and promote safe driving, walking, and bicycling.

Jointly endorsed by the town's public works and police departments, the initiative will feature a series of road safety-related topics throughout the campaign.

The first topic that the Greenwich GO campaign will cover is sharrows.

Also known as Shared Lane Markings, sharrows remind bicyclists and motorists that they must share the lane.

Sharrows are painted on the roadway to improve bicycling safety on streets that are too narrow for traditional bike lanes.

Greenwich DPW recently installed sharrows on Ritch Avenue, Hamilton Avenue, Old Field Point Road, Railroad Avenue, Steamboat Road, Museum Drive, Davis Avenue, Indian Harbor Drive, Hendrie Avenue, Drinkwater Place, Summit Road, Spring Street, Riverside Avenue, and Meadow Road.

What Should Motorists Do

• Be prepared to share the road with bicyclists. Expect to see bicyclists on the street.
• Remember to give bicyclists three feet of space when passing.
• Continue to follow the rules of the road and exercise caution.

• Use the sharrow to guide where you ride within the lane.
• Remember not to ride too close to parked cars.
