Presentation In Greenwich On Preventing & Recovering From Falls

The discussion will be held at the First Congregational Church of Greenwich.

From FCCOG: One of the greatest risks of aging is the increased incidence and severity of falls.

“About 40% of people aged 65 or older suffer a fall each year,” says Sue Cavanaugh, Outpatient Physical Therapist at Greenwich Hospital, “and their risk of breaking a hip with a fall is as high as 50%. A fall can be a devastating setback for someone who is already struggling with another ailment or is simply advanced in years.” But there is a lot that one can do to limit the risk of a fall, and to deal with its detrimental effects.

Cavanaugh will address these issues and concerns at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 28 at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich. The public is invited and admission is free for the presentation, which will be held in the church Lounge. “As you age, there are many ways to increase balance and strength, thereby decreasing the risk of falls in the first place,” Cavanaugh says. “There are also safe techniques for getting up if you do fall, so that you can limit the extent of any injuries. I will talk about and demonstrate many of these techniques in the presentation on Sunday.”
