Update Issued On Propane Leak, Evacuations In Greenwich: Fire Department

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Fire Department announced Friday afternoon it has safely resolved a propane leak at a home in Old Greenwich.

Fire crews responded to an underground propane tank leak behind a home on Keofferam Road at approximately 7:23 a.m., the GFD said.

"Out of an abundance of caution, several neighboring homes were temporarily evacuated while firefighters assessed the situation and worked with Connecticut Natural Gas and the propane company," the GFD said. "Fire crews also monitored the surrounding area, including homes on nearby Sunset Road, to ensure propane gas had not migrated into other properties."

Due to the highly flammable nature of propane, specialized equipment was needed to safely remove the gas from the damaged tank.

The Fairfield County Hazardous Materials Response Team responded with equipment that allowed the propane to be safely flared, or burned off, in a controlled manner, the GFD noted. The Stamford Fire Department also provided assistance.

"This is a common and safe method used to reduce the amount of propane remaining in a damaged tank so repairs can be made safely," the GFD said. "Once the propane was safely removed, the propane company was able to begin making the necessary repairs."

GFD personnel remained at the scene for more than four hours to monitor conditions and ensure the area was safe before residents were allowed to return to their homes.

The GFD thanked the parties involved for the specialized equipment and the assistance during the call.

"Incidents like this highlight the importance of strong regional partnerships and the coordinated response of multiple agencies working together to keep our community safe," the GFD said. "We appreciate the patience and cooperation of the residents affected by this incident."

Fire crews are currently at the scene of a propane leak in Greenwich, which has prompted several residential evacuations, according to the Greenwich Fire Department.

The GFD said the leak is on Keofferam Road, in Old Greenwich. Three homes in the area have been evacuated.

Firefighters and utility personnel are monitoring the area, the fire department noted.

The propane company is currently making repairs. Residents are advised to use caution in the area.
