Replacements For Greenwich School Board Openings Sought 'As Soon As Possible'

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Public Schools is seeking replacements for two Board of Education seats "as soon as possible" after the outgoing members changed the effective dates of their resignations to "immediately."

In a notice sent to the community Friday morning, GPS said it received separate emails last week from Board Chair Dr. Michael-Joseph Mercanti-Anthony and member Wendy Vizzo Walsh stating they would resign immediately instead of on Aug. 26, as previously planned.

Mercanti-Anthony and Walsh notified GPS about two weeks ago that they would resign. Walsh told Patch she was resigning "due to conflicts with personal and professional commitments." Mercanti-Anthony has not returned a request for comment.

"Because this accelerates the process of replacing them, we are now asking the community that anyone interested in filling these two spots to send their letters of interest and résumés to the district’s board clerk, Michael Antonaccio (michael_antonaccio@greenwich.k12.ct.us), as soon as possible," the note to the community said.

The Board of Education is seeking two Greenwich residents who are registered with the Republican Party and interested in serving out the remaining terms until the next municipal election in November 2027.

"This is a great opportunity to impact our schools in your town," the community note from GPS said. "Although these are volunteer positions, the time commitment is expected to be at a high level due to the tremendous amount of progress GPS is experiencing (building committees, budget meetings, committees, and regularly scheduled meetings)."

The Board of Education is slated to meet Monday, Aug. 17, at 5:30 p.m. to establish a process for reviewing candidates, set a schedule for potential interviews and determine when the board will vote on new appointments.
