Road Closure To Continue Near Central Middle School In Greenwich As Site Work Remains Ongoing

GREENWICH, CT — Students have returned to class at the new Central Middle School, but some work remains at the site.

The Board of Selectmen last week approved a road closure extension through Oct. 30 for Indian Rock Lane so construction crews can install a new sewer line and relocate the existing line out onto Indian Rock Lane and Stanwich Road.

Peter Alfano, who is in charge of site work at CMS for Turner Construction, went before the board last week with the road closure request.

"During the summer, we started this work and encountered rock on Indian Rock Lane. This has impacted the schedule for that work to be completed prior to the start of school," Alfano said. "We do have a significant amount of work to do, so that's why we're here requesting that work extension for Indian Rock Lane to Oct. 30."

Construction will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. All residents on Indian Rock, Ponderosa Drive and Stanwich Road will continue to have access to their property and driveways.

Traffic approaching from Stanwich Road will be routed via Stanwich Road and Orchard Street. Traffic approaching from Orchard Street will be routed via Orchard Street and Stanwich Road.

Detour signs will be in place throughout the work schedule.

"We realize this is an inconvenience and we are working with Turner to minimize the impact but the fact is this work must get done," First Selectman Fred Camillo said in his weekly newsletter to the community.

Alfano noted crews looked into other methods, such as drilling or blasting. But blasting is not an option based on proximity to neighbors.

"There really is no other option than to hammer that rock down to get to where we need to be to install that sewer line," Alfano added.

After Indian Rock Lane opens on Oct. 30, there will be another road closure for a small portion of Stanwich Road from Nov. 2 to Dec. 11.

Alfano said he will return to the selectmen with that closure request at a later date.
