Road Closure Proposed For Greenwich Drainage Project

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Board of Selectmen is scheduled Thursday night to review a proposed temporary closure of the eastbound lane of Old Post Road No. 6 between Stanwich Road and Valleywood Road.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Town Hall Meeting Room at 101 Field Point Road. The meeting will be held in a hybrid format, with a Zoom webinar available.

The proposed closure is connected to the Valleywood Road drainage improvements project and is listed for a first read.

According to a Department of Public Works memorandum included in the meeting packet, the project is intended to improve stormwater conveyance near Valleywood Road, Old Post Road No. 6 and East Putnam Avenue.

Construction is expected to begin during the week of Sept. 28 or Oct. 5, depending on approvals, and last about two months. The eastbound lane would close for approximately three weeks beginning about two weeks into the project, as excavation approaches the intersection of Old Post Road No. 6 and Valleywood Road, according to the memorandum.

The westbound lane would remain open, while eastbound traffic would be directed to Field Road to reach Valleywood Road.

Work would occur during normal daytime construction hours, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Police and traffic-control personnel would be present during active construction, according to the memorandum.

The town will make reasonable efforts to maintain access to neighboring properties, and nearby residents and affected property owners would be notified about the construction schedule and anticipated traffic impacts.

The board is also expected to discuss the open deputy police chief position with Police Chief James Heavey. The agenda lists the matter as a discussion and does not specify possible action.

The position is open following the recent retirement of Deputy Chief James Bonney.

Under old business, the board is scheduled to consider proposed amendments to Greenwich’s naming rights policy during a second read.

The board is also scheduled to review proposed changes to town mooring fees and deadlines during a first read.

The selectmen are also expected to discuss proposed revisions to Greenwich’s mooring regulations.
