Elderly New Canaan Woman Smashed SUV Into Darien Storefront: Update

No injuries were reported in the early afternoon crash on Thursday, Sept. 21.

DARIEN, CT — The 2006 Mercedes-Benz SUV that smashed into the front of Embody Fitness Gourmet on Heights Road in Noroton Heights early Thursday afternoon was driven by a 79-year-old New Canaan woman, according to Darien police.

The crash occurred at about 12:35 p.m., and no injuries were reported. Police said the vehicle accelerated through a parking space and into the store, striking a steel structural pole in the process.

"The 79-year-old operator, a resident of New Canaan, was uninjured in the collision," wrote Darien police in a statement. "She informed investigating officers that she believed she may have pushed the wrong pedal when pulling into the parking spot in front of the store, causing the vehicle to suddenly accelerate. No one else was injured as a result of the crash."

The crash remains under investigation, but no charges have been filed at this time and the driver's identity has not been released.

Darien fire personnel, who also responded to the crash, checked the structure to ensure that it remains stable.
