Popular NYC-Based Plant Shop Opens Pop-Up Boutique In Greenwich

The brand was founded in NYC in 2012 based on the premise that plants make humans happier and healthier. This is the first CT location.

GREENWICH, CT — The Sill, a New York City-based plant shop, has expanded into Connecticut with a new pop-up boutique on Greenwich Avenue.

Located within the front area of Maman, the new French bakery and café that opened at 98 Greenwich Ave., in June, The Sill offers up a curated selection of greenery, which includes flowering plants such as orchids and bromeliads, pet-friendly plants, and ceramic planters and plant accessories.

Eliza Blank, CEO and founder of The Sill, said the boutique will stay open at Maman until Sept. 30. If there's enough interest from the community, Blank said she may look for a permanent location in Greenwich in the future.

Blank founded the company in Manhattan in 2012 based on the premise that plants make humans happier and healthier.

The brand's online shop delivers perfectly potted plants to your door and empowers new "plant parents" by blending commerce, content, and community. Customers can take advantage of free shipping and same-day delivery.

There are also nine brick-and-mortar locations across the country. Each offers plant shopping, repotting, curbside pickup, and more, like a variety of in-person workshops for plant enthusiasts of all experiences.

"The Sill is a company that specializes in providing premium indoor plants and related products to enhance living spaces. We curate a wide variety of houseplants, ranging from beginner-friendly options to rare and exotic varieties. Our mission revolves around making plant ownership accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their gardening expertise," Blank told Patch via email.

"Customers can expect a meticulously designed shopping experience with an assortment of healthy and well-cared-for plants. The Sill prioritizes education, offering valuable guidance and resources to help customers choose the right plants for their specific needs and to ensure successful plant care," Blank added.

The Sill said it surpassed $1 million in annual revenue in 2016, and after raising venture capital, the business grew from $1.5 million to eight figures in annual sales between 2018 and 2022, and established a community of one million-plus people across its direct-to-consumer online platform and brick-and-mortar stores.

Blank said The Sill "came very close" to opening a shop in Greenwich in 2019 since many customers in the area were already shopping online.

"The company started in Manhattan in 2012 so in a way it felt like a natural progression, given a lot of our own customers were starting to make the move to Greenwich and its surrounding towns," Blank said. "At the time, however, we couldn't find just the right spot on Greenwich Avenue and so we paused the effort. When the opportunity presented itself to join Maman it felt like the stars just aligned."

Blank noted that Maman, which also has roots in New York City, has complementary values and targets a similar audience.

"We were especially drawn to Maman given, Elisa, the founder of Maman, and myself share a common perspective as founders with young children," Blank said. "I was excited knowing we would collaborate effectively to create a seamless and appealing shopping experience."

Blank also said Maman is known for its beautiful spaces and could provide "an excellent environment" for The Sill's products.

"The concept of pairing a plant boutique within a charming cafe would attract customers who are looking to enhance their surroundings with indoor greenery while enjoying a cozy atmosphere," Blank said.

Blank added that the brand takes great pride in promoting the benefits of indoor greenery, as plants can improve air quality, reduce stress and enhance well-being.

"With a strong emphasis on customer satisfaction and personalized service, The Sill aims to create a welcoming and inclusive community for plant enthusiasts," Blank said.

The Sill at Maman is open each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
