Start Of Demolition Nearing At Central Middle School, According To Latest Update

The new Central Middle School project is progressing as the district eyes an August opening.

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Public Schools has released an update on summer happenings at the Central Middle School construction site. Notably, the start of demolition of the existing CMS building is listed under "July Look-Ahead."

District spokesperson Jonathan Supranowitz told Patch this week that an exact start date is still to be determined.

The new 125,000-square-foot building is being constructed in two phases just north of the current school.

Currently in phase one, the new building is slated to open to students and staff in August, the latest update says.

Here's a complete list of work completed in May and a look at work slated to take place over the next three months, according to the district. Work is weather-dependent.

May Look-Back

  • Continued installation of interior finishes
  • Began installation of gym flooring and equipment
  • Substantially completed the exterior façade
  • Completed building utility connections
  • Began hard-scape installation around the building
  • Initiated the punch list (closeout) process

June Look-Ahead

  • Complete the installation of interior finishes
  • Start the commissioning and balancing of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems
  • Finalize the installation of hardscape and landscape
  • Start paving the driveways and parking lot areas

July Look-Ahead

  • Start the demolition of the existing building
  • Finalize the punchlist and continue the commissioning and balancing of MEP systems
  • Remove trees and rock in Phase 2
  • Start the sanitary sewer work on Indian Rock Lane. Partial road closures have been approved by the Board of Selectmen
  • Perform road safety upgrades on Orchard Street
  • Continuation of fire suppression items (temporary & permanent)

August Look-Ahead

  • Continue the demolition of the existing building
  • Install the student drop‐off and pick‐up driveway
  • Continue work on the fire lane access adjacent to the existing building
