Suspect Busted Attempting To Cash Fraudulent Checks: Greenwich PD

The accused is also wanted on a New York City warrant for a parole violation.

GREENWICH, CT — A 26-year-old man was arrested Monday afternoon at the People's United Bank on the Post Road in Greenwich after bank personnel discovered that he was attempting to cash fraudulent checks, according to Greenwich police.

Giovanni Ortiz, of no known address, was apprehended at about 1:30 p.m. He had successfully cashed one fraudulent check and was attempting to cash another, said police. The amount of the checks were not disclosed, nor were specific details of his arrest.

Soon after taking Ortiz into custody, Greenwich police discovered that he was wanted on a warrant out of New York City for violating his parole and violating "strict and intensive supervision and treatment."

In connection with the Greenwich bank incident, Ortiz was charged with:

  • Third-degree larceny
  • Criminal attempt at third-degree larceny
  • Third-degree identity theft
  • Criminal impersonation
  • First, second and third-degree Forgery
  • Interfering with an officer

The interfering charge is from Ortiz giving police a false name at the time of his arrest.

He was held in lieu of combined bail totaling $105,000 ($100,000 for the New York City charges; $5,000 for the Greenwich charges), and is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on April 9.
