Thefts of Equipment from Construction Sites Plague Greenwich Contractors, Landscapers

Trailers filled with equipment or sometimes just cell phones are being swiped from construction sites around town, according to police.

Greenwich Police are local landscapers and construction contractors to keep better tabs on their equipment as thefts of trailers and equipment continue throughout town.

Greenwich Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said that there’s been influx in the thefts in the past couple months, primarily from the mid-country and back country areas of town.

The latest theft was reported Oct. 16 from a site in the 400 block of Round Hill Road. Two backpack leaf blowers were stolen. A week earlier a construction contractor reported the theft of pump-style scaffolding from his construction site on Valley Road.

The contractor was pulling into the site when he notice a white van leaving the property with equipment hanging out of the back. It wasn’t until later in the morning that the contractor realized that the equipment he saw in the van was missing from the site, according to Gray.

And in September, several contractors reported their cell phones were swiped from their trucks parked on another backcountry construction site. There also have been a couple of instance where entire trailers containing thousands of dollars worth of equipment were hauled away from construction sites, according to Gray.

Gray said, “please, landscapers and contractors need to take notice. We’ve had a lot of construction and landscaping equipment stolen from the mid-country to the back country, sometimes during the day, sometimes during the night. They need to take precautions.”
