Spring signals many new beginnings ... Including the start of the tennis season.
So when you pull your racket from the depths of the closet, you should check that it's aces ready for court action.
Jason Johnson oversees operations of the Greenwich outpost of Gut Reaction on Lewis Street and he serves up some helpful tips on how to tell whether your racket needs restringing. For weekly players, the rule of thumb should be twice a year, says .Johnson who's a master stringer who's worked the US Open, coaches tennis and has been swinging the rackets himself for 22 of his 28 years.
Johnson, who says it takes about 15 minutes to install an average of 37 to 38 feet of polyester string on a racket, advises, "if you play four times a week, you should restring four times" a season. "It depends on how hard you hit the ball, the spin you put on it. Figure the number of times you play a week is the number of times you should restring."

Greenwich resident Carolyn Denholm dropped off one of her racquets Tuesday afternoon said she and her three tennis-playing sons are loyal customers. "They know my specs. I'm pretty demanding. It's quick and convenient. I always come back."
He estimates he restrings at least 10 rackets a day in addition to selling rackets, equipment and the requisite tennis whites at the store that opened at 16 Lewis St. In August 2011. It's the sister affiliate of Gut Reaction that's been a fixture in Darien for about 30 years.
