CT Weather: Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For Parts Of State

Most of Connecticut is under a Hazardous Weather Outlook and the weather could get stormy later today. Here's what to expect.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Fairfield, Hartford, New Haven, and Litchfield counties up until 10 p.m. Friday.

Another day of potentially stormy weather awaits us this afternoon and evening before we clear out and see an improvement this weekend, especially on Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for much of the state Friday due to thunderstorm and hail concerns.

As always with thunderstorms, some areas may get hit hard and some others won't see a drop of rain. The only area of the state that doesn't have a Hazardous Weather Outlook is New London County and the immediate coast of Middlesex County.

According to the National Weather Service, Fairfield, New Haven and northern parts of Middlesex counties, "There is a low chance for damaging winds, large hail, and flash flooding from thunderstorms this afternoon into tonight."

For Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties, "There is a low chance of strong to possibly severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening from near Ashburnham to Hampden, Enfield and Southington westward. The main threat will be damaging wind gusts."

For New London County and the coast of Middlesex County there is a 50 percent chance of showers and storms mainly after 9 p.m. Friday and fog will be a concern overnight.

For Litchfield County, the weather service says, "The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of eastern New York and adjacent western New England within a Marginal to Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms for this afternoon and evening. Damaging wind gusts and hail one inch in diameter or greater would be the primary threats from these scattered thunderstorms. There is a marginal to slight risk for excessive rainfall this afternoon and evening. Some lines of slow moving thunderstorms could produce highly localized nuisance flooding, mainly in urban and poor drainage areas and low spots in hilly terrain."

Storms may spill over into all of Connecticut Saturday morning before clearing is expected in the afternoon Saturday.

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Gil Simmons says, "Sunshine and warm temperatures today with highs in the 80s to around 90. Keep your eyes to the sky there could be some big thunderstorms later in the afternoon going into the evening! Some showers and thunderstorms tonight into Saturday morning. Some sun but also a pop-up thunderstorm Saturday afternoon! Beautiful sunny and low humidity on Sunday!"
