NWS Investigating If Tornado Hit Fairfield County Tuesday: UPDATE

A tornado watch was issued for the area for several hours on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service will send someone to Fairfield County to investigate if the area saw a tornado touch down on Tuesday evening. At one point, a Tornado Warning was issued for the area, especially New Canaan, Norwalk and Westport areas.

The warning was quickly cancelled but Fairfield and Litchfield counties were under a Tornado Watch for several hours Tuesday as strong storms moved through the western part of the state Tuesday evening.

"We will be conducting a storm survey tomorrow in portions of Rockland, Westchester and Fairfield Counties in relation to the severe thunderstorms that moved through today. A final assessment including results of the survey are expected to be completed by Wednesday afternoon."

The National Weather Service has just canceled a Tornado Warning for south central Fairfield County, which included the New Canaan, Norwalk and Westport areas. The Tornado Warning had been issued until 6 p.m. but was cancelled around 5:50 p.m. While it's great news that the warning has been cancelled, there is still a Tornado Watch in effect until midnight for Fairfield and Litchfield counties.

A tornado did touch down in Westchester, New York Tuesday evening.

The National Weather Service says in a 6 p.m. update that: ...THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR SOUTHERN FAIRFIELD COUNTY IS CANCELLED...

"The storm which prompted the warning has weakened below severe limits, and no longer poses an immediate threat to life or property. Therefore, the warning has been cancelled. However small hail and
gusty winds are still possible with this thunderstorm. A Tornado Watch remains in effect until midnight."


A Tornado Watch has been issued for Fairfield and Litchfield counties until midnight, according to the National Weather Service. A tornado touched down in Westchester, New York and the severe weather is moving into Fairfield County this evening.

At 5:30 p.m. the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Fairfield County, including Norwalk, Westport and Darien until 6 p.m.


Here is an updated special weather statement issued for Fairfield County:

At 513 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was located near Bedford, or near New Canaan, moving east at 25 mph. Winds in excess of 40 mph and dime size hail are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Stamford, Norwalk, New Canaan, Fairfield, Greenwich, Trumbull, Westport, Ridgefield, Darien, Wilton, Weston, Redding, Bedford, Georgetown and Easton.

This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect until midnight EDT for southern Connecticut...and southeastern New York.


And the National Weather Service also adds that a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 6 p.m. for the southern coast of Fairfield County.

* Until 600 PM EDT.

* At 530 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over New Canaan, moving east at 30 mph.

HAZARD...Ping pong ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect wind damage to trees and power lines.

* This severe thunderstorm will be near... Norwalk and Darien around 535 PM EDT. Westport around 545 PM EDT.
