Town Of Greenwich: Introducing Our Sustainability Committee

Greenwich has a history of sustainability initiatives going back decades. Evidence can be seen through the myriad nonprofits, garden clubs, residents, and Town departments that have been at the forefront to advance Greenwich towards a sustainable future.

The Greenwich Sustainability Committee was formed to cultivate and expand a sustainable Greenwich through a partnership of individuals and organizations. These entities are committed to a sustainable Greenwich based on shared values of protecting, preserving, and restoring our natural ecosystems while enriching the character of the Town. The founding committee members include Town officials, members of local organizations, and residents. The Sustainability Committee uses the 2019 Plan of Conservation and Development and Sustainable CT (a statewide sustainable certification program) as framework for guidance.

Co-chaired by Selectperson Jill Oberlander and Director of Environmental Affairs Patricia Sesto, the committee is composed of eight (8) sectors: Transportation & Air Quality; Buildings & Energy; Water & Land Use; Waste Reduction; Food Systems; Beautification & Quality of Life; PR & Outreach; and Advocacy, Legislative & Policy. “Sustainability goes beyond one Town department. Sustainability is delving into all departments, art and culture, education, housing, and energy. Sustainability runs through our entire community,” says Sesto.

The Committee’s purpose is to work collaboratively to support a cohesive and comprehensive network that will: record existing initiatives; identify gaps; recommend actions; advocate and catalyze action; and raise public awareness. “I am very impressed by the dedication of the Committee’s dynamic members to highlight existing initiatives and to collaboratively support new endeavors all to ensure a sustainable future for our community,” Oberlander commented.
