Warning Issued By Greenwich PD Over Bitcoin Blackmail Scheme
In addition to Greenwich, the scam also has hit Darien and New Canaan in recent months.
GREENWICH, CT — Some Greenwich residents recently have received blackmail letters that threaten to expose a secret unless the victim pays a certain amount of money in the digital currency bitcoin, and Greenwich police are warning people that the letters are a scam.
Similar letters have been sent to residents of Darien and New Canaan in recent months, and typically demand a few thousand dollars. The letters, usually targeted at married men, threaten to reveal an alleged affair or other secret that will humiliate their wives unless payment is made in the untraceable online currency.
As many as five Greenwich residents have reported recently receiving the letters, writes Greenwich Free Press.
