Woman, 61, Accused Of Shoplifting On Greenwich Avenue: Police

Police said a woman used a shopping bag lined with cardboard and tinfoil to bypass security measures at department stores.

GREENWICH, CT — A New York City woman faces several charges after she was accused of shoplifting on Greenwich Avenue last week, according to the Greenwich Police Department.

Gwen Thomas, 61, of Washington Heights, N.Y., was charged with fourth-degree larceny, conspiracy, possession of a shoplifting device, criminal impersonation, second-degree forgery and interfering with an officer. She was given a $10,000 bond.

On Aug. 3 at 12:39 p.m., officers responded to the rear of a building in the 180 block of Greenwich Avenue after a detective detained Thomas, police said in an arrest report.

Officers found Thomas in possession of a shopping bag that was lined with cardboard and tinfoil in an attempt to bypass security measures at department stores, police said, noting that 10 shirts from a local store on Greenwich Avenue were in the bag.

The store confirmed that the items were stolen Aug. 3, police said.

While being processed at police headquarters, police discovered that Thomas had impersonated someone else, and forged a signature on two state documents, according to an arrest report.

Thomas is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 17.
