Weather forecast:
1. Traffic Advisory In Effect This Weekend For Road Race In Groton (patch.com) — Drivers in Groton should expect delays around Noank Village on Saturday morning as the Tour de Noank Fun Run and 5K Road Race take over streets near Esker Point Beach. Police advise extra caution on Groton Long Point Road, Brook Street, Elm Street, and Marsh Road between 9 a.m. and noon, when race traffic is expected to be heaviest.
2. Residents plan next steps after being displaced by Groton fire (theday.com) — More than 50 residents were displaced after Sunday’s fire at The Ledges apartments in Groton, and officials say the damaged building is now condemned. Local agencies, including Town of Groton Human Services, the Red Cross, and Groton police comfort dogs, are helping residents retrieve belongings, find temporary housing, and collect donations of food, hygiene items, gift cards, and cash.
3. Man charged in Groton gold bar scam is deported to China (theday.com) — A man previously charged by Groton Town police in a gold bar theft scheme targeting a Groton resident has had his case dismissed after entering a diversionary program and then returning to China. Prosecutors say he served as a courier in a scam where a victim was tricked into paying a fake computer technician with gold bars. No additional arrests have been made in the Groton case.
4. 'Absolutely ridiculous': Connecticut beach towns charge nonresidents far more to park (theday.com) — Connecticut shoreline towns are charging nonresidents far more than locals to park at public beaches, but Groton is one of the few communities that charges residents and visitors the same daily rate. Groton residents can still buy cheaper season passes, while nonresidents pay more for the season but not per day. Lawmakers have debated capping these disparities, but towns have successfully resisted changes so far.
