Annual Groton City Day Celebrates The City, Its Citizens

Held annually on the first Friday in August, the event gives the city a chance to show off a bit with a jam-packed fest at Washington Park.

GROTON CITY, CT — A city within a town, the City of Groton celebrates that very fact: that it's a city, a small and close-knit one, but a city nonetheless on City Day. Held annually on the first Friday in August, the traditional event gives the city a chance to show off a bit. And have a good time doing it. Set for Aug. 4 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Washington Park, the event is jam-packed with fun stuff for the family. And living in, or being from, Groton City is not a prerequisite. Far from it.

Come one, come all is a motto.

"We love the City of Groton and take pride in providing top-notch services for the residents. We also love showing and telling you all about what we do here at the City of Groton. City Day is a tremendous opportunity to showcase the various departments within the City of Groton and Groton Utilities," the city notes.

Each town department has displays, games, and giveaways. There are loads of activities for kids including laser tag, obstacle course, a racetrack, photo booth and an (inflatable) axe-throwing game.

Elected officials, department heads and volunteers from the community cook and serve up "very affordable" hot dogs and burgers. The city's water departments gives away snow cones. The Groton City Police Department fits bike helmets for children, with the helmets provided by the Groton Lodge of Elks.

Community organizations and local businesses have information tables. The Fitch High School Robotics Team, the Aluminum Falcons, will hold demonstrations.

And while maybe not fun, the Ledge Light Heath District will also be providing Covid-19 vaccines on the Softball Field. Just walk up. No insurance card or ID required. Each recipient will get a gift card to be determined soon.
