Attack Submarines Require Maintenance Every 6 Years: U.S. Navy

What they really want is an eight-year maintenance schedule. Groton submarine builders gave 800 suggestions on how to extend the schedule.

Electric Boat employees based in Groton, who work on building subs, were charged with suggesting ideas that would reduce how often or how much maintenance needs to take place on the attack submarines.

Eight hundred suggestions were narrowed down to 128, then sent to the U.S. Navy for review, according to Ken Blomstedt of Electric Boat, as quoted in Yahoo News.

New submarines just beginning construction includes almost all the suggestions from the Groton workers, he said.

Some of the suggestions to help extend the quality of the subs are:

  • A new type of paint application that prevents damage from marine life
  • Water-resistant grease
  • Extra support for propeller

The goal is to both minimize cost and increase how often the subs are called to combat. Navy Capt. Mike Stevens was quoted as saying the Navy wants the subs on the water as much as possible.
