GROTON, CT - Pleasant Valley Elementary School in Groton will close at the end of the school year due to budget cuts, according to media reports..

The decision comes a day after the Town Council voted to cut $5.2 million from the Board of Education's requested budget, according to NBC Connecticut. School officials spoke to faculty Tuesday morning, and an email was being sent to parents.

The school’s closure will leave about 300 students displaced , NBC Connecticut reported. The move will also impact 18 teachers and about a dozen staff members, who officials said will either be laid off or reassigned

Council previously voted Monday night to cut approximately 6.7 percent from the board’s request for the fiscal year starting July 1, according to the New London Day. Councilors said they anticipate an additional $5 million cut in education funding to come from the state.

The council’s vote would provide $72.5 million in education funding for the coming fiscal year, the New London Day reported. The board had initially put in a request for $77.7 million.
