8 Displaced After Fire Hits Groton Multifamily Home [UPDATE]
Firefighters responded to the call early Tuesday morning and had to deal with a frozen fire hydrant.
GROTON, CT — Firefighters responded after a fire hit a two-story duplex in Groton early Tuesday morning. the home had major structural and smoke damage.
The Submarine Base Fire Department was dispatched to Driftwood Circle for fire coming from a chimney at 1:43 a.m., according to a post from Submarine Base Firefighters Local F-129.
Firefighters found the home's roof was engulfed in flames. Police and firefighters helped exit the residents of the townhome-style house and a neighboring address, police said in a statement.

No injuries were reported.
The home was deemed uninhabitable and the American Red Cross is assisting eight people displaced by the fire.

Other area agencies provided mutual aid including the New London Fire Department, the Poquonock Bridge Fire Department, the City of Groton Fire Department, Groton Ambulance, and Lawrence & Memorial Hospital paramedics.
Firefighters encountered challenges such as a frozen fire hydrant, but they were able to get the hydrant flowing and control the flames, WFSB 3-TV reported.
The Submarine Base Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
