First Lady Michelle Obama Coming to Groton Submarine Base this Weekend

GROTON, CT – First Lady Michelle Obama will be in Groton this weekend as the US Navy commissions a new ship, NBC Connecticut reported.

Obama is serving as the sponsor of the Navy’s new fast attack submarine, the future USS Illinois, NBC Connecticut reported. She will be attending the ceremony at the Naval Submarine Base.

The submarine is only the second US Navy ship to be commissioned with the name Illinois, according to NBC Connecticut. Illinois is the home state of both the First Lady and President Barack Obama.
