Groton Appoints New Board of Education Member
The new appointment fills a vacancy created in May.

The Groton Board of Education unanimously appointed Katrina Fitzgerald on Monday to replace former board member Shelley Gardner.
Over the years, Fitzgerald has served in volunteer roles in both the public schools and the community.
She has worked as a domestic violence educator for Child and Family Agency, a substitute paraprofessional at S.B. Butler Elementary and Northeast Academy, and a kindergarten paraprofessional at Northeast Academy. She has also volunteered in various positions at local high and middle schools.

Fitzgerald considered running for the board once her children finished high school and approached the Republican Town Committee.
“It’s something I’ve always been interested in, and having watched the board and been involved for so many years, being on the board you can make a difference,” she said. “I’d like the public to know what’s going on at the board level. The more you know what’s going on, the more faith you have.”

As a new board member, Fitzgerald said she would like to hold more public forums, create a clearer policy for responding to the public’s questions and suggested updating the district website more often.
