Groton Changes Dog Policy At Local Beach
The new policy will be in effect from April through September.
GROTON, CT — Groton Parks and Recreation said a new seasonal dog policy at Esker Point Beach will take effect April 1, barring dogs from the beach through the second Sunday in September.
According to the department’s press release, the change is intended to keep the beach in compliance with state health regulations and to protect the local environment.
The department cited Connecticut Regulation 19a-36-B61, which states, "Domestic animals shall be prohibited in the water and on the immediate shoreline associated with the water of a public swimming area when the public swimming area is open for use."

The department said the updated policy addresses public health, wildlife and public safety concerns during the swimming season.
According to the press release, dog waste can carry parasites such as hookworm, which can pose risks to people using the beach. The release also said the presence and scent of dogs can disrupt shorebirds by causing them to leave nesting and feeding areas.
