Groton Man Hit On Way to Mailbox Was Staple at Speedbowl

Many remembered him as a quiet but gentle man who loved animals.

GROTON, CT - The family of Groton man killed on the way to his mailbox said he was a fixture at Waterford’s Speedbowl, according to The Day.

John Brouwer Sr. was hit by a passing car on his 80th birthday, The Day reported. He worked for years at the Speedbowl, filling a number of positions there.

When his son, John Brouwer Jr., started racing, his father became his coach and biggest supporter, The Day reported. Many remembered Brouwer Sr. as a quiet but gentle man who loved animals.
