Groton Police: 18-Year-Old Charged In Mystic Burglaries
Mercedes Vona, 18, of Pequot Avenue in Mystic was charged by Groton Town police with a number of burglaries.

MYSTIC, CT—Pequot Avenue, on the Groton side of Mystic stretches from Sandy Hollow Road to Burrows Street, north to south. Along that avenue, police say, 18-year-old Mercedes Vona allegedly burglarized a number of homes in August, a Day report reads.
Court records show that, arrested twice in connection with the break-ins, the former Fitch High School student is alleged to have stolen thousands of dollars in cash. Some of that was reported to have been saved by a woman for decades, tips from hairdressing representing her life savings, she told police, according to a report.
Vona, who lives at 369 Pequot Avenue records show, is known by at least one of the alleged victims; a neighbor whose home Vona had been in before. The girl told police that she was abusing Xanax and owed money to a drug dealer.

Vona, who is out on $150,000 bail, was arrested twice in connection to the burglaries which, according to court records, are listed as occurring Aug. 16.

In the initial August arrest, Vona was charged with three felony burglary and attempted burglary charges, three separate misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief, as well as misdemeanor charges of interfering with an officer, breach of peace and larceny.
In the Sept. 19 arrest, new charges were added in connection with the burglary of a reported neighbor's life savings and include a felony larceny charge, a felony burglary charge and misdemeanor criminal mischief.
Vona is being electrically monitored while out on bond. She's due in court Oct. 11.
