Groton's Elderly Residents Warned About Scams
Groton Police Lt. John Varone recently spoke at the Groton Senior Center.

The Groton Police Department still receives about three to four reports per month about phone and internet scams, even though residents are getting better at detecting such occurrences, according to Lt. John Varone.
During a recent gathering at the Groton Senior Center, Varone outlined several scams that still take place, even one involving an alleged assassin, believe it or not.
“My name’s John and I’ve been hired to kill you,” Varone told the group of seniors, as reported by The Day. “But I have a second thought. They’re only giving me $5,000 to kill you. But if you give me $6,000, I won’t kill you.”

Other scams include fake phone calls from the IRS and utility companies that claim you owe them money. Or a friend or relative who supposedly needs money or a foreign country seeking your help.
“Always ask yourself, ‘Why?’ Why would a foreign country seek your help?” Varone said.
