UPDATE: Man Shot In Groton City, Suspect At Large

A man was shot several times on Ledyard Avenue after an argument over a woman, cops say, adding they're looking at 'persons of interest.'

GROTON CITY, CT — Police say a shooting just after 3 p.m. in a heavily populated neighborhood in Groton City that left one man with gunshot wounds was "over a woman."

Groton City Police initially told Patch they cannot confirm "what occurred," though initially said it was "gunfire." And a report by The Day said a woman was shot. Initially, reports indicated the shooting was on Ledyard Street, but the address is on Ledyard Avenue in the City of Groton.

It's now confirmed that at 3:08 p.m., police got a call about a shooting in the Bank section of the city, in a "heavily populated residential" neighborhood on Ledyard Avenue. Police say the injured man is currently being treated at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Police said witnesses described a silver newer model car, maybe a Volkswagen with three men inside, one in a white hoodie. Cops are looking for that car and those men, they said. It's reported a 9mm handgun may have been used in the shooting.

And police say the shooting is a result of a dispute "over a woman" and the subsequent social media exchanges that followed. Police said they have"persons of interest," people that cops say were involved in a fight before the shooting. Police say they have search warrants ready to carry out and they have evidence to be examined forensically.

Initial reporting, now confirmed, is that a man was shot and was taken in a private car to a fire station on Broad Street in downtown New London and was then transported by ambulance to L+M. Early reports said the victim was hit three times. The Day reported the hospital was at first placed on lock down.

At around 3:45 p.m., police could be heard on dispatch radio that authorities were looking for a male in a white hoodie in connection to a "shooting that happened about 15 minutes ago." Police dogs were involved in the search.

New London Police confirmed that car with the Groton City victim of the gun shot wounds came to the New London fire department's North Station and then was transported to hospital by the fire department. Police said the car was "secured" and then police went to the hospital with the man who had been shot.

In a release posted to Facebook by the office of Groton City Police Chief Michael Spellman, Connecticut State Police, Groton Town Police, New London Police and the New London States Attorney's Office are all part of the investigation.

This update corrects an earlier version of that reported local media saying a woman was shot.
