Man Killed In Groton Crash Identified: Police

A Groton man was killed and two others were injured in a car accident over the weekend.

GROTON, CT — Police have released the identity of a person killed in a two-car accident Saturday morning in Groton. Charles R. Vandermark, 40, of Groton, died in the crash.

At 10:18 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a two-car crash in the area of 149 Buddington Road between Poquonnock Road and Drozdyk Drive.

Police said they found a Volkswagen Jetta and Jeep Cherokee with heavy front-end damage. Both vehicles were in the roadway.

Vandermark, the sole occupant of the Jetta, was found not to be conscious or alert, police said. First responders provided medical care, but he was pronounced dead at an area hospital, police said.

The driver of the Jeep and her 5-year-old daughter were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

A 41-year-old woman and her 5-year-old daughter also suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a local hospital for treatment and later released, according to police.

"The initial investigation into the accident showed the operator of the Volkswagen Jetta was traveling northbound on Buddington Road when his vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and struck the Jeep Cherokee, which was traveling southbound," police said in a news release. "The operator of the Jeep Cherokee attempted to maneuver to the right to avoid the crash but was unable to do so."
