Groton Mixed Doubles 10K Relay Bringing out Competitive Spirit in Couples and Families of All Ages
Mixed Doubles 10K Relay road race on Saturday, September 27 at 4:00 p.m. at Esker Point Beach.

Teams of men and women will be taking over the streets of Groton Long Point and Noank for the Mixed Doubles 10K Relay on Saturday, September 27 beginning at 4:00 p.m. The race brings together teams of one male and one female in categories such as brother/sister, father/daughter, and mother/son, as well as an open category which includes husband/wife teams. Prizes will be awarded in various age groups in each category, which the ages of both team members combined.
The concept for the Mixed Doubles 10K Relay was invented by local running legend Amby Burfoot, winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon and editor of Runner’s World. Earlier this year, Burfoot presented the idea to Groton Parks and Recreation and the group worked together to make his dream a reality. “I believe the Mixed Doubles Relay concept is the perfect road race,” Burfoot said, “with its emphasis on a modest distance, the 50/50 gender split, and family and lifetime fitness. I can’t wait to see how runners react to this fun new event.”
The Kievman family from Manchester is excited to take on the race as a family. Dad Adam will be teaming up with daughter Mackenzie for the father/daughter division, while mom Shannon and son Brennan are taking on the mother/son division. Both teams have a combined age of 54. The Kievmans are enjoying the friendly competition that has come with registering for the race. “It is something we can do together,” said Shannon. “We are looking forward to coming to Groton for the race.”

With a total of 133 years between them, Barry and Susan Sheckley of Niantic are the team with the highest combined age. “It’s a great idea,” said Barry of the race. “There aren’t many team events in running.” He is excited to be teaming up with his wife of 45+ years for the event. “She’s a much better runner than I am,” he said diplomatically. The couple has been running together since the early 60s and recently competed in a similar relay style race around Valentine’s Day. They are looking forward to competing against younger teams this weekend.
Teams can register for the Mixed Doubles 10K Relay online at GrotonRec.com until Thursday, September 25 for $30 per person and on Saturday, September 27 beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Esker Point Beach for $35 per person.
