Obituary: Edward M. Wininger, 73, U.S. Naval Sub Base Firefighter

Edward M. Wininger, 73, died in his Westbrook home on September 30, 2014. He was born to William G. Wininger and Olive (Butler) Wininger in Guilford, Connecticut on November 27 1940.

He grew up in Westbrook and joined the U.S. Coast Guard after graduating from Old Saybrook High School. He became a firefighter at the U.S. Naval Sub Base Fire Department in Groton Connecticut where he served 24 years and retired a Captain.

After he retired from the Sub Base he worked for Ryder Student Transportation and later First Student. Ed joined the Westbrook Volunteer Fire Department in November 1960 and was an active member for 53 years until his death.

In addition to being a volunteer firefighter he also enjoyed; hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family.

Ed is survived by his wife of 53 years Alberta (Button) Wininger, his son Christopher B. Wininger and his wife Catherine (Powell) Wininger, his daughter Lori (Wininger) Canova, his grandchildren, James M. Wininger, Elizabeth L. Wininger, and Benjamin R. Canova, his brother Brian W. Wininger and his wife Maureen Wininger, and his former son-in-law Matthew B. Canova.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Westbrook Congregational Church, 1166 Boston Post Rd., Westbrook, CT 06498.

A reception will immediately follow at Westbrook Fire Department Headquarters, 18 South Main St., Westbrook, CT. Donations in Ed’s memory can be made to Westbrook Chemical Engine Company No. 1 Inc., P. O. Box 691, Westbrook, CT 06498.
