Obituary: Michael F. Chiappone Sr., 91, of Groton

He always had a smile on his face and after he spoke with you, you surely would have a smile on yours as well.

Michael F. Chiappone Sr., 91, of Groton Died late Wednesday November 16, 2016 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.

He was born January 4, 1925 in New London to Charles and Mary Jullarine Chiappone. He married the former Mary Louise Fitzpatrick on November 15, 1947, they just celebrated 69 years of marriage, and she survives him.

Mike graduated high school from the Chapman Technical School in New London where he lettered in baseball, basketball and football. He then joined the United States Navy and served during World War II and was honorably discharged for his service. He worked, until his retirement, at Electric Boat as a Technical Aid. Mike’s passion was sports. He participated in all sports as a player, coach, manager, referee, official and umpire. He served on several boards of local sports organizations. He served as President for the Electric Boat Athletic Club, President of the Amateur Softball Association, President of the Eastern CT Association of Approved Football Officials and President of the Eastern CT Board #8 of Approved Basketball Officials.

Where he had his most joy was on the baseball diamond teaching, coaching and umpiring Little Leaguers. He had a way with kids and loved teaching them. He still stayed in touch with some of his players even from over 50 years ago. He was a kind, generous and gentle man. He always had a smile on his face and after he spoke with you, you surely would have a smile on yours as well. Even though he has left us we know he is “SAFE” at home.

Besides his loving wife Mary, he is survived by a beloved son Michael Jr. and grandson Michael III of Groton, two brothers Joseph of New London and Harry of Waterford. He is predeceased by his cherished son Matthew, brothers Santo and Louis, and his infant sister Agnes.

Visitation is scheduled Tuesday November 22, 2016 from 4:00pm – 6:00pm at the Byles Groton Memorial Home 310 Thames Street in Groton. A Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in New London with Military Honors.
