Willie was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the Navy from 1955 to 1957 and then re-enlisting in 1961.

Willie Charles Cothran, 80, of Groton, CT, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at the Greentree Manor in Waterford.
Mr. Cothran was born on December 16, 1937 in Stevenson, AL the son of Roosevelt and Ruthie Martin Washington. He was married to the former Sara Ann Hudson on March 12, 1963 in Jacksonville, FL.

Willie was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the Navy from 1955 to 1957; and then re-enlisting in 1961 until his retirement in 1979. Following his retirement from the Navy, Willie began working for the Civil Service and Department of Defense as a police officer at the U. S. Submarine Base in Groton.
Besides his wife Sara of Groton, Willie is survived by two daughters Jlanda Cothran -Richter, and Calita Cothran, both of Groton.
