Officer Pursues Drunk Driver on Wrong Side of Interstate in Groton

Police said an officer was pursuing a suspect when he turned onto an exit ramp and drove on the wrong side of the highway.

GROTON, CT - Police said a wrong way pursuit on Interstate 95 early Friday in Groton ended with no crashes or injuries, the New London Day reported. An officer had been pursuing a car when the suspect turned onto an exit ramp and drove on the wrong side of the highway.

Officers had attempted to get Justin P. Rich, 30, of Branford to pull over after he was seen driving erratically, but he refused, according to the New London Day. He then pulled onto the Exit 86 ramp that leads cars off I-95 south. (To sign up for Groton breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

Police said the pursuing officer was aware of the danger chasing the suspect posed to the public, but he determined to continue the pursuit, the New London Day reported. The whole pursuit lasted for about mile, after which the suspect attempted to flee on foot.
