Summary of petition

GROTON'S RIGHT TO VOTE (GRTV)

GRTV is a non-partisan effort to get the Groton Charter Revision Committee’s recommended Town Charter revisions on the November 2018 ballot. This will give all voters a chance to say yes or no to the revisions.

10% of registered voters are needed to get the approval on the ballot.

Charter Revision Recommendations:

· Town and Board of Education Budgets will be subject to voter approval, similar to the Stonington and City of Groton budgets. We do NOT have that ability right now in the Town of Groton.

· It establishes a Board of Finance with 7 representatives elected by each district. This Board of Finance will also make financial recommendations to the Town Council.

· It eliminates the Representative Town Meeting system, thus allowing citizens to vote directly on the annual Town & School budgets, which has been a major problem for many years

· There are no major changes to the Town Council, Town Manager or Board of Education.

Objective: To streamline Town government and give voters a direct say in spending (like Stonington). We feel that voters today are well informed on the issues and should be entitled to make their own decisions.
