School Set to Close in Groton, Parents of Nearly 300 Students Notified

Parents of Groton students were notified their children's school will be closing, while teachers got early retirement incentive packages.

GROTON, CT - Three-hundred Pleasant Valley Elementary School children were sent home with a letter Tuesday notifying their parents the school will be closing, the New London Day reported. An early retirement incentive package was also sent to teachers in an attempt to avoid layoffs.

The decision to close the school was voted on Monday by the Board of Education, according to the New London Day. The closure is part of a plan to cut nearly $3 million from its budget request for the upcoming fiscal year. (To sign up for Groton breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

The request had initially been cut by $5.2 million, but the cut was reduced Friday by Town Council, the New London Day reported. The new fiscal year begins July 1.
