SUMMER IN THE CITY BLOCK PARTY COMING TO THAMES STREET

The City of Groton's Summer in the City Program for 2014 is coming to an end with a bang! The program will be holding a FREE ADMISSION Block

The venue is the large parking lot used for Puffins Restaurant, which was graciously donated by Seabird Enterprises. The space will be transformed for the ultimate Sunday Funday that will include local vendors, food trucks, live music for all ages, an activity area and a live radio broadcast from Full Power’s 106.5 FM. Our three performers for the day will be Steve Elci and Friends, The Can Kickers and a closing performance by Flowers & Kain.

The Builders and Remodelers Association of Southeastern Connecticut member Exterior Solutions will be building a ‘No Bullying Bench’ with materials donated by Ring’s End Lumber. The bench will be donated to a City of Groton school upon completion.

This Sunday Funday Block Party will also be featuring Airbrush Tattoos by Dawn Twerdy, Caricature Drawings by local artist Elaine Mills, and food trucks to keep the attendees fed and happy.

To add to the excitement, local artist Jason Silva has organized a free one-day Wood Panel Pop-Up Art Gallery at the Bailey Insurance Parking lot site on Thames Street. The Thames River Water Taxi will be running and the Block Party shuttle has added a stop at the Groton Landing to bring visitors coming by water!.

“I am delighted that the culminating event for Summer in the City will be held on Thames Street. Summer in the City has been all about showcasing what our City has to offer. This event will highlight all Thames Street has to offer and the tremendous progress this City is making on this historic street.” said Mayor Galbraith when asked about her thoughts on the committee thus far.

All of this would not be possible without the support of Mayor Marian Galbraith of the City of Groton, Summer in the City Staff Person Susan Bailey, Events Committee Chairperson and Lead Organizer Christopher M. Calkins Jr. of DIGISIST, Tricia Walsh of the Greater-Mystic Chamber of Commerce and the amazing help of the committee and volunteers. The event also received a very generous donation from Groton Utilities to help cover the many expenses that come with organizing such an extensive event.

Free parking will be available at the Bailey Insurance Parking Lot and shuttles will be running for the duration of the event to and from the parking area. For more information, please visit our Facebook Page at facebook.com/sitcgroton or contact Christopher M. Calkins Jr. at (860) 333-5550 ext. 301 or by email at chris@sitcgroton.com.
