The non-medical use of prescription drugs – the very ones in your medicine cabinet -- is one of the most common forms of drug abuse in America, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). And the majority of teens abusing drugs get them from medicine cabinets in the homes of family and friends. And often, unused or expired prescription drugs are abandoned in the corners of the cabinet.  

So what do you do with unused meds?

Don't flush them. That can contaminate the water supply. Don't throw them in the trash. Drugs can be retrieved and used, sold, or traded.

The drop box provides residents the opportunity to dispose of expired, unused and unwanted medications in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

The drop box was purchased by the Groton Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention (GASP) Coalition, a program of Ledge Light Health District, with funding from the Southeast Regional Action Council.

The GASP Coalition is funded through the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and the Southeastern Regional Action Council (SERAC). The coalition is an initiative of Ledge Light Health District, a local health department that serves Groton, Ledyard, East Lyme, New London and Waterford.
