Woman Killed In Groton Apartment Fire: PD
Police said a woman was killed in a fire at a Groton apartment complex.

GROTON, CT — Police said one person was killed in a fire within a Groton apartment complex Wednesday night. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. at the Branford Manor Complex on Branford Avenue, officials said.
Police confirmed an adult female was found dead on the second floor of the residence. Her identity has not been released yet, pending notification of next of kin and results of a post-mortem examination by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, according to a news release. Police said the severity of the fire, heat and smoke made no rescue and recovery sweep efforts for the interior of the home possible. The Poquonnock Bridge and Old Mystic Fire Departmentsassisted in containing and extinguishing the fire.

"The City of Groton thanks all those agencies for their assistance in containing a dangerous fire and keeping it from spreading," police said in a release.
The Connecticut State Police Office of the State Fire Marshall, City of Groton Police and the City of Groton Fire Department are currently investigating the cause and origin of the fire. Their investigation is ongoing and results of their findings will be reported later, police said.

Red Cross officials said the organization is helping four families – five adults and six children – following the fire. The Red Cross provided assistance to meet the families' immediate needs, as well as comfort kits containing personal care items a resident might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire.
A recovery envelope containing information helpful to families recovering from a fire was also provided. Those affected will connect with organization in the coming days to work on a longer-term recovery plan.
