The scammer then says the person has an upcoming court date, but they can pay a fine through gift cards.

Police said scammers may even use a "spoofed" number that mimics the GPD main line.

"Please know that these calls are a total scam! The Guilford Police Department will never call you to solicit money, demand payment, or try to obtain your personal information," police said.

Residents who receive a call from someone claiming to be a Guilford police officer and are unsure if it's legitimate are asked to call the GPD at 203-453-8061 to verify the call.
