Guilford To Hold Public Hearing On Proposed Veterans Tax Exemption Change

GUILFORD, CT — The Guilford Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing next month on a proposed amendment to the town's veterans property tax exemption ordinance.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 8:30 a.m. at Guilford Town Hall, 31 Park St., and via Microsoft Teams.

The board will consider amending Chapter 247, Article X of the Town Code to adopt additional municipal options available under recently enacted Public Act 25-168.

The proposed change would extend eligibility for the property tax exemption to surviving spouses of qualifying veterans who died after Oct. 1, 2012. The town's current ordinance applies to surviving spouses of qualifying veterans who died after Oct. 1, 2014.

Under the ordinance, for assessment years beginning on or after Oct. 1, 2025, a veteran entitled to a property tax exemption for a dwelling under state law is also entitled to an additional exemption of up to two acres of the lot on which the dwelling sits.

The exemption also applies to the surviving spouse of a veteran who had been determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs to be permanently and totally disabled based on a service-connected disability rating of 100 percent, provided the spouse remains a widow or widower.
