Sports have a way of teaching invaluable life lessons — building character, fostering teamwork and strengthening the bonds within a community. In the Guilford area, these values have shaped some truly remarkable athletes from different eras, whose accomplishments continue to inspire.
Patch is celebrating five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. This list is just a snapshot, with countless other athletes helping shape the rich sports culture in our area.
A Guilford High School graduate, Kevin Maher went on to a decorated soccer career at Yale before turning pro in the Major Indoor Soccer League. He was named the 1984-85 MISL Rookie of the Year and had been a 1982 NCAA Division I First Team All-American.
A four-year standout at Guilford High School in both basketball and soccer, Brianna Rooney was named Connecticut's Gatorade Player of the Year in basketball and a McDonald's All-America nominee as a senior, while also earning All-State honors on the soccer field. She went on to Quinnipiac, where she was twice named the Northeast Conference's Defensive Player of the Year.
A two-time Olympian, Michelle Guerette competed for Team USA in the women's single sculls at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, winning the silver medal. She also raced in the quadruple sculls at the 2004 Athens Games before going on to a decorated career on the U.S. national rowing team.
The architect behind Guilford High School's girls basketball dynasty, Jim Rooney guided the Indians to three straight Class L state championships from 2001 to 2003. He was later named the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance Coach of the Year in 2003 for that title run.
Joe Maher built Guilford High School's boys soccer program into one of the state's most consistent winners over his coaching tenure, helping the Indians pile up eight Class L state titles across the decades. He was named the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance Coach of the Year in 2001 for his work with the program.
