GUILFORD, CT — A home in Guilford was damaged by a fire that broke out early Wednesday evening, according to the Guilford Fire Department. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
At approximately 6:09 p.m. on Oct. 28, 911 dispatch received a call from a bystander near the 840 block of Long Hill Road relaying a nearby homeowner's report of smoke and fire coming from the home.
Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the home and they deployed two hose lines in an "aggressive" interior attack, the GFD said in a news release. Units extinguished the fire and brought the scene under control within 10 minutes of arriving.
"Thanks to the quick and coordinated actions of responding crews, firefighters were able to contain the fire to a living room that was located on the first floor of the residence," the GFD said. "The interior of the residence sustained extensive smoke damage throughout the first floor."
The GFD noted the lone occupant of the home was able to self-evacuate prior to the arrival of firefighters. The American Red Cross and the Guilford Police Department helped the homeowner secure temporary accommodations for the evening.
Mutual aid was provided by the Madison, North Madison and Branford fire departments.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Guilford Fire Department Fire Marshal's office, the State of Connecticut Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit and the Guilford Police Department.
