Branford hosts Hammerfest Triathlon on Sunday

It’s Hammertime!

Don’t expect to see anyone wearing parachute pants, a la ’80s icon MC Hammer, at the Owenego Inn this Sunday, September 14, in Branford. But expect plenty of Spandex clinging to as many as 300 triathletes who’ll gather at the swim and tennis club for the start and finish of the 18th annual Hammerfest Triathlon.

The festive event, organized by Race Productions, benefits Brian’s Hope (brianshope.org), a local charity that supports research, newborn screening, and awareness for adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare hereditary disease of the central nervous system that manifests itself in boys in early childhood. The USA Triathlon-sanctioned sprint-distance race will test elite and amateur triathletes alike—from elites to first-timers—in a half-mile swim in the Long Island Sound waters in front of the Owenego, a 13.5-mile bike ride, and a 4-mile run. The competition begins at 7:30 a.m.

Registration remains open, with an entry fee of $90, though may be closed on race day. Athletes can compete individually or as a relay team. Early check-in and packet pickup will be on Saturday, September 13, at Zane’s Cycles (http://zanes.com) in Branford, the event’s lead sponsor. While the competition is serious, you can’t touch Hammerfest when it comes to family fun. The day also includes a kids’ 1-mile fun run, followed by a free barbeque and music.

Brian’s Hope is named for Branford resident Brian Kelley, who was diagnosed with ALD at age 6. Today, at 25, thanks to the loving support of his family and friends, Brian, a graduate of Branford High School, enjoys an active life. At last year’s Hammerfest, more than $60,000 in funds was raised, thanks to the generosity of great sponsors and donors.
